Acclaimed singer-songwriter Kevin Denney continues his return to his bluegrass roots with the release of “Stone Blind Love” on Turnberry Records.
For Denney, the new song represents more than another bluegrass release, it is another chapter in a remarkable musical journey that has taken him from the bluegrass and gospel music of his Kentucky childhood to the top levels of Nashville’s country music community and now, full circle back to the music he loved from the beginning.
That ability to tell a compelling story in a few well-chosen lines is evident throughout “Stone Blind Love.” The song takes on the dangerous, irresistible side of falling in love, the kind of love that makes logic almost irrelevant.
“Don’t let an old love kill what’s stirring in your heart,” Denney sings, before delivering the song’s central message: “You gotta love ’em with your heart and not your mind.”
“Stone Blind Love” doesn’t promise that following your heart will end well. In fact, the songwriters admit that they knew from the beginning that you can’t control where the relationship would lead. Still, “just a little while with you was worth the pain.” In the end, the memories are all that remain but the song makes clear that some loves are worth the risk.
The new release follows a productive return to bluegrass for Denney on Turnberry Records. His recent singles “Chasin’ Old Memories Down,” “Left Me Lonesome,” “Kiss My Bluegrass Goodbye,” “Gulf Shore Line” and “High On A Mountain” have established a strong new chapter in his career. Denney’s Turnberry album Any Ole Time brought together his talents as a singer, songwriter, and interpreter of traditional roots music.
For Denney, the move back into bluegrass is a return to his musical foundation. As he has explained, he began writing country songs during his Nashville years, but bluegrass never left him. Now, with Turnberry Records, he is embracing the music that has been part of his life since childhood.
“Stone Blind Love” carries that history into a song built around a universal feeling: sometimes the heart knows exactly where it wants to go, even when the mind knows better.
