Mayfield Independent Schools cancelled school for Thursday, Aug. 20, due to the outages and damage, saying the safety for students and staff “is always our top priority.”

Overnight, a 2.3 magnitude earthquake hit the area and surrounding cities, including Massac, Paducah and Murray.

The earthquake reportedly occurred at the same time the area was under a tornado warning. There is no confirmed connection between the recorded earthquake and severe storm.

The area also saw over 60 miles per hour winds, and the National Weather Service’s Paducah Office has reported multiple flooded roadways, as well as downed trees in Graves, Ballard and McCracken counties.
