(WKYT) – Update: The Scott County Coroner has identified the two victims as Darren Paul Nelson, 61, and Shauna Colleen Nelson, 62, both of Knoxville.
The coroner’s office says the two were traveling home when they came upon slower traffic and lost control of the vehicle.
Authorities say their bodies have been taken to Frankfort for an autopsy.
The crash remains under investigation by Kentucky State Police Post 12.
Previous: Two people were pronounced dead at the scene of a crash on Interstate 75 southbound near the 141-mile marker, according to the Scott County Coroner’s Office.
Fire crews said the crash happened around 2:19 p.m. Officials said a car collided with the rear of a fire engine that was on scene for a separate single-vehicle crash. The coroner’s office said the driver and the front-seat passenger of the car were pronounced dead at the scene.
Two back-seat passengers were taken to UK HealthCare, where they are listed in stable condition, according to the coroner’s office.
The Scott County Fire Department said three firefighters who were on the truck were taken to local hospitals as a precaution.
The coroner’s office told WKYT that witnesses reported rain and slick roads in the area at the time of the crash. A cause has not been determined.
Drivers should expect traffic delays for several hours, including multiple lane closures. Traffic is being diverted at Exit 144 to U.S. 25, then back to I-75 at Exit 126.
Kentucky State Police Post 12 will handle the investigation. This is a developing story; WKYT has a crew headed to the scene.
