(WKYT) – An invasive species of ant has been showing up in Kentucky.
The Asian Needle Ant is an invasive stinging ant. According to the USDA, the ant species has been relatively unnoticed for years, but is starting to cause issues in several southeastern states.
The USDA says the main concern with the Asian Needle Ant is their ability to displace critical native seed dispersing ant species, meaning long-term negative results could occur in North American forests.
These ants, though not terribly aggressive, have painful stings that cause varying reactions in people. The ants can cause anaphylaxis in people with an allergy to the sting. The USDA says many reports suggest the sting causes intense pain, which comes and goes over several hours. Skin redness and mild to severe hives are also reported according to the USDA.
The USDA says some control measures have been effective against the Asian Needle Ant, but are unlikely safe or affordable to employ in forests. More information is available on the USDA website.
