(WAVE/WKYT) – Kentucky drivers are set to deal with lower wait times and reduced paperwork starting this summer.
Governor Andy Beshear announced on Wednesday, April 15, that the commonwealth will be welcoming a modernized driver licensing system and online portal in June.
Replacing the existing 40-year-old system, the new approach will allow Kentuckians to create accounts through the new myDrive portal, allowing them to pre-apply for a license, permit or ID, request a replacement, check their current license standing and more.
Drivers due to renew their license in June are still encouraged to visit a regional office before June 4, as all offices will be closed June 4 and 5, and operation hours will be adjusted June 8-18 as the system undergoes migration.
“Team Kentucky remains committed to improving our licensing services so that Kentuckians are spending less time waiting in line and more time getting where they need to go,” said Gov. Beshear. “This new system will provide families with the secure, online services they expect in today’s world and we are encouraging folks to plan ahead and take care of any needed renewals ahead of June, as the transition will briefly impact hours at our offices.”
Named the Kentucky Information Network for Driver Licensing, the new system is scheduled to launch on Monday, June 8.
Officials say KINDL will streamline licensing for commercial drivers and allow medical certificates to be accepted directly from approved medical providers. This process will cut out the need to manually submit results to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s National Registry, and the existing MyCDL portal for uploading medical certificates will be discontinued.
The following temporary changes to licensing services will be made to allow staff to convert the more than 4 million driver records into the new KINDL system:
