(WSAZ/WKYT) – The Kentucky State Police have released the name of a man that was fatally struck on I-64 on the early morning of April 10.
The call came in around 1:35 AM, stating that a pedestrian had been struck in the eastbound lanes of I-64 near the 150-mile marker, according to a KSP press release.
According to police, an investigation found that Anwarulhaq Safi, 33, was driving a 2022 Freightliner Cascadia when he made a sharp movement to the right, struck a guardrail and went down a steep embankment before the semi overturned on its side.
After the collision, Safi got out of the semi and climbed up the embankment, before he entered the eastbound lanes of I-64 on foot.
While standing in the roadway, Safi was struck by a car and sustained fatal injuries, where he was later pronounced dead on the scene by the Carter County Coroner’s Office, according to KSP.
The driver of the vehicle that struck Safi was transported to King’s Daughters Medical Center for evaluation, according to the release.
A Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) also conducted an assessment and found that neither drugs nor alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor at this time, according to KSP.
The incident remains under investigation by Troopers with Kentucky State Police Post 14.
