(WKYT) For today’s Good Question, Daniel asks: Kentucky’s Department of Natural Resources now requires a permit to use previously free shooting range facilities. My question is, will a different permit need to be purchased for each range now, and is this an annual fee?
The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources announced a change to state regulations earlier this month. A permit is now required to use firearms and archery equipment on any department-managed, leased, or affiliated shooting ranges.
The permit system will help the agency better gauge how many people use the ranges, promote safe practices, and support maintenance and improvements at those facilities, the department said.
The permit is free for anyone 16 and older who has an annual Kentucky hunting or fishing license.
An Annual Shooting Range Permit is good at any wildlife-managed shooting range.
A one-day permit at the range is $5.29. The annual permit is $26.43.
The ranges affected by this change include Curtis Gates Lloyd WMA, Higginson-Henry WMA, John A. Kleber WMA, Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Headquarters, Miller Welch-Central KY WMA, Taylorsville Lake WMA, Veterans Memorial WMA, and West Kentucky WMA.
