A complaint has been filed against The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff Tim Catron, and Deputies Jerry Coffey and Jerry Meadows following an officer involved shooting earlier this year that claimed the life of Jeremy Bertram. The complaint was filed by parents Randy and Lisa Bertram.
Court documents show the complaint states (among other things) the deputies had a statutory duty to refrain from using unnecessary force. The deputies use of deadly force on Jereme Bertram was unreasonable, excessive, and in violation of clearly established law prohibiting assault, battery and gross negligence. That the defendants action displayed an extreme indifference to the value of human life. It also states that Sheriff Tim Catron, is liable for the acts of omissions of his deputies, and the Sheriff’s office is vicariously liable for the acts and omissions of its agents and employees.
The complaint asks for Judgement against the defendants jointly and severally, for compensatory and punitive damages, and any and all other relief to which they may appear entitled.
Keep in mind that as in all court cases there are two viewpoints to each complaint and the defendants will have an opportunity to respond.
