(WKYT) – Russell County crews rescued a 17-year-old who had suffered a broken leg in a remote area of a lake bed.
Russell County Search & Rescue, the Russell County Sheriff’s Office, Russell County EMS and Russell County Dispatch located the patient about one mile from the nearest access point on the lake bed.
According to the search and rescue squad, the area the victim was found in is typically underwater “during summer pool.”
Responders requested an air medical helicopter after determining a ground evacuation would not be the safest option for the victim.
The helicopter landed on a dry section of the lake bed, facilitated rapid transport and and provided the victim with care “as quickly as possible,” according to Russell County Search & Rescue.
Russell County Search & Rescue said the incident highlighted the value of strong coordination between emergency services.
