According to Monticello Police Chief, Josh Asbery;
On September 8, 2026, at approximately 2:10 p.m., Officer Thomas responded to a motor vehicle accident at a local intersection. Upon arrival, he found damage to both a rock wall and a stop sign.
Witnesses provided officers with a detailed description of the vehicle and its driver, reporting that the vehicle left the scene and traveled to East High Street. Officer Thomas located a vehicle matching the description a short time later.
According to the report, the vehicle displayed clear signs of recent impact, including a shattered windshield, deployed passenger‑side airbags, fresh body damage, and rocks lodged in the damaged frame consistent with the struck wall.
Officer Thomas and Chief Asberry made contact with the driver, who appeared to be under the influence of a controlled substance. The driver attempted to provide false identifying information, but officers recognized him from prior encounters and identified him as Clayton Sexton.
Sexton was taken into custody and transported to the Wayne County Emergency Room for testing. While at the hospital, authorities say he became belligerent and refused to comply with staff and officers. He was eventually secured and transported to the Wayne County Detention Center without further incident.
Sexton faces multiple charges, including:
- Operating a Motor Vehicle While Under the Influence of Substances 2nd Degree
- Leaving the Scene of an Accident
- Giving an Officer False Identifying Information
- Disorderly Conduct 2nd Degree
- Resisting Arrest
- Criminal Mischief 1st Degree
- Operating a Motor Vehicle Without an Operator’s License
He was also served with a Parole Violation Warrant and three Wayne County Court Warrants for Non‑Payment and Failure to Appear.
