(WKYT) – The Kentucky Distiller’s Association says it is being cautious as recent tariffs against Canada impact the bourbon industry in the state.
Eric Gregory, president of the Kentucky Distiller’s Association, said many people are tightening spending, which leads to less alcohol consumption by adults.
Gregory said exports grew 150% under free and fair trade, leading to more jobs and billions of dollars in investments.
“When you start looking at the policies and tariffs it’s like putting the brakes on a freight train for us and so now you’re seeing us have to deal with the aftermath of that especially in Canada where it’s not just tariffs, they pulled us off the shelves completely. That’s actually worse than a tariff so we’re supportive of anybody that can get everybody back around the table again, let’s try to get back to zero free trade for us and let us get back to making great whiskey,” Gregory said.
Gov. Andy Beshear sent a letter to President Trump calling on the president to immediately end federal tariff and trade policies, saying it’s crippling Kentucky’s economy.
Beshear said it’s not only hurting the bourbon industry, but also coal, beef and inflation.
