(WKYT) – Former London Mayor Randall Weddle’s attorney alleged that a fundraiser for Gov. Andy Beshear’s reelection campaign destroyed evidence in a campaign contribution case.
In a memorandum filed by Weddle’s attorney requesting a change in venue for court proceedings, the attorney alleged that they learned Attorney General Russell Coleman’s “star witness,” who they say is a high-ranking fundraiser, destroyed vital evidence.
According to Weddle’s attorney, the fundraiser deleted text messages between themself and Weddle that were exchange at the time the contributions were made. The attorney claims these text messages prove Weddle’s innocence.
“What’s more, the discovery makes it clear that these are just a sampling of the many issues that the trial court will have to address,” the memorandum reads. “This case is nothing but blunder piled upon blunder.”
The memorandum also argues the trial should not be held in Laurel Circuit Court and should be transferred to the Franklin Circuit Court.
Weddle is currently facing four felony charges for violating campaign contribution restriction and expenditure limits. He was indicted by a Laurel County grand jury.
According to court documents, Weddle is accused of using his personal credit card to make 24 donations to Beshear’s 2022 campaign and the Kentucky Democratic Party.
