The Monticello City Council held a lengthy meeting Monday night.
Wayne County Deputy, Valis Smedley and Monticello Police Chief, Josh Asburry were recognized for helping rescue a child in need.
The council agreed to re-bid the 606 and AJ Loyd projects, due to the initial bids.
The ABC report showed alcohol sales of $398,878 with regulatory fees collected at $19,452.
The Fire Department reported showed 42 runs in the city and 20 runs in the county with 22 fires reported for the month of May.
The police department report for the month included 26 arrests 21 alcohol related calls 8 domestics, 24 motor vehicle accidents including 3 with injuries
The council also heard the first reading to amend the city business license ordinance.
Much of the meeting was spent discussing the restaurant tax as the Monticello tourist commission director Tod McFarland addressed the council seeking their blessing to move ahead with the purchase of 79 acres of land in the city at a cost of 1.25 million. The property would eventually house WC Fair events, an amphitheater and an agricultural section for the local school system. During the discussion Councilmember Alan Vaughn introduced the first reading of an ordinance to repeal the restaurant tax and state he felt it should be placed on the ballot for voters in November.
