Wayne County Varisty Cardinals were triumphant over Southwestern 9 – 4 on Monday.
Southwestern got on the board in the first inning after Riley Jones induced Jonah Brock to hit into a fielder’s choice, but one run scored.
The Bat Cards captured the lead, 4-1, in the top of the second after Caleb Sargent walked, Gage Gregory was struck by a pitch, Palmer Smith hit a sacrifice fly, and Wayne County scored on a passed ball, each scoring one run.
Mick Miller hit a solo home run to left field in the bottom of the sixth for Southwestern.
Jones earned the win for the Wayne County Cardinals; the hurler allowed eight hits and four runs ( two earned) over six innings, striking out seven and walking three. Pierce Jasper took the loss for Southwestern. The reliever went two innings, giving up three runs on two hits, striking out two, and walking two. Jayden Taylor stepped on the bump first for Southwestern. The starter gave up zero hits and four runs ( one earned) over two innings, striking out one and walking four. Cooper Stockton pitched one inning of scoreless ball for the Cardinals in relief. The righty gave up zero hits, striking out two and walking one.
Smith and Gregory were a force together in the lineup, as they each collected two hits for the Cardinals while hitting back-to-back. Smith and Jones were a one-two punch in the lineup, as each drove in two runs for the Cardinals. Wayne County had patience at the plate, tallying six walks for the game. Stockton and Sargent led the team with two walks each.
