(WKYT) – Kentucky lawmakers filed a resolution recommending that a statue of Sen. Mitch McConnell be put in the New State Capitol’s rotunda.
Sponsored by Senate President Robert Stivers and Sen. Robin Webb, Senate Resolution 204 calls for the statue to be put in the rotunda after renovations finish in the New State Capitol.
The resolution points to some of McConnell’s career milestones, including being the longest-serving U.S. senator from Kentucky and being the second Kentuckian to be the Senate majority leader.
McConnell was first elected in 1984, and became the longest-serving U.S. Senate party leader after leading the Republican conference nine times since 2006, according to the resolution.
Before renovations began, there were statues of former President Abraham Lincoln, former statesman Henry Clay, former Vice President Alben Barkley and pioneer surgeon Dr. Ephraim McDowell in the Capitol’s rotunda.
The New State Capitol is expected to open following renovations in 2029.
“Placing a statue of Senator Mitch McConnell, a distinguished and accomplished world leader and unwavering advocate for this Commonwealth, in the Capitol Rotunda would serve as an honor and testament to his exemplary service and a small token of appreciation from a grateful Commonwealth,” the resolution said.
