Tips to Save Money on Utilities while at Home

(LEX 18) — We’re spending a lot more time at home now because of the coronavirus pandemic. Between working from home, homeschooling, and finding entertainment, the energy bill could leave your wallet feeling lighter. Here are some tips to keep that from happening.
The best way to save on your utilities is with a simple move – Turn it off. This includes lights when you’re not using the room and swapping out TV time for a good book or walk.
Also, instead of using the oven, reheat leftovers in the microwave or go with another meal that doesn’t need heating up, like cereal.
With the weather warming up, turn on your ceiling fan instead of touching the thermostat. The U.S. Natural Resource Defense Council says a fan uses just 10% of the energy that a central air conditioner uses.
When it comes to your water bill, stick to shorter showers and don’t leave the water running when brushing your teeth.
If you’re still struggling to pay the bills, Kentucky Utilities and Louisville Gas and Electric Company are taking measures to help customers. Until May first, the companies will suspend disconnects for residential customers who have trouble paying bills and will waive new late fees incurred during this time.
