According to Wayne County Sheriff Tim Catron what appears to be a road rage incident has resulted in two Wayne County men being shot.
At approximately 11:50 a.m. on September 16, 2023, the Wayne County 911 Dispatch Center received a call about a man laying in the roadway on Kentucky Highway 776 in the Freedom area of Wayne County that was shot.
Wayne County Sheriff’s Office Deputies Jerry Coffey and Joe Horne responded to that location along with Wayne County Emergency Medical Service. Once on scene, the Deputies learned that the incident occurred from an apparent road rage incident between two vehicles with both drivers receiving gunshot wounds from each other. One of the drivers received life-threatening injuries and was treated at the scene by the Wayne County Medical Service, then transferred from the scene by Air Methodist Helicopter Service to the University of Kentucky Medical Center. The other driver received minor injuries and refused any type of medical treatment. Both drivers gave conflicting details of the incident stating the other shot first in order to protect themselves.
The Monticello Fire Department also responded and assisted Medical Services.
The investigation is continuing by the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office. The evidence in this case will be presented to the Wayne County Circuit Court Grand Jury in the near future.
