At approximately 8:27 p.m. a juvenile female approached WCSO Deputy Nick Bertram in the parking lot of the Wayne County Courthouse stating she had just shot a man inside an apartment. As she provided more information, it was determined the shooting had occurred in an upstairs apartment in the rear section of a building across the street from the Wayne County Attorney’s Office in downtown Monticello.
WCSO Deputies, MPD Officers, and Wayne County EMS personnel all responded.
Phillip Gerhardt, 54, was found with injuries from a single gunshot wound to his left arm and upper chest area. Gerhardt was treated and transported by WCEMS to the Wayne County Hospital then airlifted to the U.K. Medical Center.
MPD Sgt. John Hurd took the 16-year-old female into custody on charges of Assault 1st Degree, Theft by Unlawful Taking (firearm), Possession of a Firearm by a Minor, and Possession of Marijuana.
The investigation is ongoing. The juvenile female is being transported to a facility in Campbell County where she will be incarcerated until an initial court proceeding in Wayne District Court Monday morning at 11:30.
