Rain is needed this weekend for Local Crops

Hot temperatures and drought-like conditions continue locally and in the area and it’s becoming a concern for farmers.

Wayne County Agriculture Extension Agent, Glen Roberts tells us that the next few days will be critical in determining how our local crops develop. At this point the corn crop is beginning to tassel and it’s a very critical time for good temps and moisture.

Mr. Roberts reports the early hay harvest was good, but it looks as if the second cutting may not yield as much.  A crop recovery will depend on two things, how soon we get rain and how much falls. The forecast for this weekend and the upcoming week have plenty of chances for wet weather but it will take an abundant rainfall for crops to make it back to an average year for local farmers.
