Fire in Downtown Monticello

Fire has destroyed a historic building in downtown Monticello. Our 911 communications center received a call at 3:54 this morning from someone who lived in the adjacent apartments reporting the fire.  The building was known as the Bill Wray and The Conley building.  Fire Chief Gabe Heatherly has reported the fire was controlled in a matter of minutes and was kept from spreading to the adjacent apartments.
Damage has been reported to the Rae and Palm building which is the old Silver Star Building. An arson investigator has been requested to determine the exact cause of the fire and whether or not it may have been intentional.
One person, a tenant of the apartments around the back of the structure was taken to the WC Hospital by EMS for treatment of a non-life-threatening medical condition.
The first block of North Main Street, from the crosswalk to the stop light, will remain CLOSED until further notice. The first block of Ky 92 West/West Columbia Avenue will also remain closed until further notice as MFD’s water hoses remain across the roadway. All other parts of downtown are open for traffic.  Monticello Mayor, Tracie Sexton tells us the remaining properties will have to be demolished.
The Wayne County Courthouse will be closed until further notice, as some water damage has been reported, crews will be coming in to clean today.
