Wayne County Homemaker Recipe – Brownie Bars by Pat Nelson

BROWNIE BARS

1 (14 oz.) pkg. caramels

2/3 c. undiluted evaporated milk, divided

1 pkg. German chocolate cake mix

¾ c. margarine softened

1 c. chopped nuts

1 (6 oz.) pkg. semi-sweet chocolate bits

In the top half of the double boiler (or microwave), melt caramels and 1/3 cup evaporated milk over hot water.

Meanwhile, in a large bowl, combine cake mix, margarine, nuts, and the remaining 1/3 cup evaporated milk.  Mix until all ingredients are moistened.  Spoon half of the mixture onto greased and floured 9×13 inch pan and bake at 350 degrees for 6 minutes.  Remove pan from oven and sprinkle evenly with chocolate bits.  Spread melted caramel mixture on top of chocolate and spoon remaining cake mixture overall.  Bake 12 to 18 minutes longer at 350 degrees until puffed and edges start to leave sides of the pan.  Cool and cut into small squares.

Note:  The cake mixture is stiff and hard to spread.  I find it is easier to pat the mixture out like cookies and place them in the pan, overlapping edges slightly.
