Mary Vaughn Baumer

Mary Vaughn Baumer age 76 of Woodland, California, passed away Saturday, December 25, 2021, at University Davis California Hospital in Sacramento, CA. following a stroke on December 6th. She was born June 22, 1945, the youngest of four daughters born to Robert and Christiana Vaughn of Monticello, Kentucky. She married Paul Baumer in Louisville, KY on July 20, 1974.

She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Paul; 1 sister Glenda Gibson of New Castle, IN; two step-daughters, Lesa Crouch (Charlie) of West Paducah, KY and Lori Phillips (Roger) of Kevil, KY; step-grandson, Travis Crouch of Chattanooga, TN;  brother-in-law, Phil Johnson of Monticello, KY; sister-in-law, Doris Baumer of Paducah, KY; 9 nephews and 2 nieces; 14 great-nephews and 7 great-nieces; and 4 great-great nephews and 4 great-great nieces.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Christiana Vaughn; 2 sisters, Marleen Callanan of Cypress, CA and Barbara Johnson of Monticello, KY; in-laws, Henry & Bettie Baumer and Margaret & Carl Walter all of Paducah, KY; 2 brothers-in-law, Richard Callanan of Cypress, CA, and William Baumer of Paducah, KY; nephew, Rev. James Walter of Little Rock, AR; and great-nephew, Ryan Walter of Paducah, KY.

Mary was a graduate of Wayne County High School in Monticello, KY.  She earned her Bachelor’s in Elementary Education from Western Kentucky University and also, her Master’s in Education from the University of Louisville.  Mary taught 1st grade and Learning Disabilities in Jefferson County Kentucky School System for a number of years.  She was a commissioned Kentucky Colonel and a Duchess of Paducah and was also Miss Wayne County in 1962-63.

She took early retirement from teaching when Paul was promoted to his employer’s Corporate Headquarters in Richmond, VA.  After a number of years, in 1983, Mary and Paul moved west to Woodland, CA for employment in the Seed Industry.  For the last 38 years, they have been residents of Woodland.

She was fortunate to be able to travel with Paul to all 50 states and 14 foreign countries, during his employment in upper management with a leading seed company.

The family request no flowers, rather it will be kind of you to donate to the charity or church of your choice as a memorial to Mary.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, January 15, 2022 between 12:30 – 1:30 pm. Funeral service will be private for family only.
