Coach Woods Receives Lifetime Achievement Award

Coach Woods accepts the Ralph Beard Lifetime Achievement Award

Congratulations to Wayne County Basketball Coach Rodney Woods who was recently presented with the impressive Ralph Beard Lifetime Achievement Award.

Woods’ record speaks for itself with 769 wins in the state of Kentucky which puts him fifth on the all-time wins list in KHSAA history. His teams have earned nine Regional Championships and 20 District Championships to date. Woods has built a phenomenal boys basketball program at Wayne County Schools.

“The Ralph Beard Award is a tremendous honor and Wayne County Schools are very proud and thankful for what Coach Woods has accomplished throughout his tenure.  He is one of the best to ever do it and we are thankful he has done it at Wayne County,” said Wayne County Athletic Director Kevin Jones.

Guy Hollander, representing the LIons Club Eye Foundation traveled to Monticello to make the presentation. He thanked Coach Woods for his years of service and talented coaching abilities. He explained that he was recognized by his peers and nominated by the Coaches Association of Kentucky and the public media for this award.

“I can’t think of how many people’s lives he has impacted” during his career, said Hollander. Instead of the annual banquet announcing these basketball stand-outs, a virtual live feed will be available on April 18 when the 2021 Mr. and Miss Kentucky Basketball Awards recipients are announced.

The Ralph Beard Lifetime Achievement Award was first given in 2008 and meant to recognize an individual for lifetime achievement in the game of basketball. The award is given by the Mr. Basketball Fraternity and the Kentucky Lions Eye Foundation. Ralph Beard was a Kentucky High School All Star in 1945 and part of the Fabulous Five from the University of Kentucky that won back to back NCAA Championships. He was also a 1951 Olympic Gold Medal Winner, and a member on the first NBA All-Star team. Beard died in 2007 and the award was started in 2008.
