Wayne County has an ongoing outbreak of Hepatitis A

The Lake Cumberland District Health Department has announced that Wayne County has an ongoing outbreak of Hepatitis A with 7 cases and climbing.

There were 4 cases in June, one case in May, one in April, and one dating back to last December.

As of this week there have been no reported cases yet for July.

Hepatitis A is a vaccine preventable disease. Symptoms include fever, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, jaundice, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

Risk factors for acquiring the infection are illicit drug use, homelessness and contact to a known case of hepatitis A.

The Health Department is urging Wayne County citizens, especially drug users, their friends and families, as well as food service workers and health care worker to get vaccinated.
